Nowadays, organizations are adopting a flexible work culture for their employees. This means that an
employee is allowed the freedom to come to work at his own convenience but is required to put in the
stipulated number of working hours. They can punch-in and punch-out accordingly. In this way, the
employees feel empowered and take responsibility to fulfill their duties wholeheartedly. Sometimes, they
are given the permission to work from home (WFH) so that they can avoid time in commuting and focus
more. This has been the new normal of working during the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic. Despite
having several limitations, the employees are adjusting to it and connecting with each other virtually to
continue business operations. Overall, there has been a cultural shift or change in paradigm in the way
organizations function.
In contemporary times, there is a lot of importance given to work culture. People do not like to come to
the office with the sole intent of working. They want to enjoy the company of their coworkers whilst availing
the spiffs that their organization has to offer. Many employers like Amazon and Google are going out of
their way to make work look more like an adventure. They are making their employees feel comfortable
by providing them with sprawling campuses to go around, relaxing dressing etiquettes, an assortment of
various cuisines to choose from and the list keeps growing. It is interesting to note that culture is one of
the biggest facets of an organization, which is enticing bright talent towards it.
If you consider the past two decades, most of the revenue was generated from business process
outsourcing sector. As such, employees were put under tremendous amount of pressure to deliver, and
they were subjected to stress. Working at unearthly hours and sometimes round the clock became the
norm. Although people were getting the moolah, their work-life balance was thrown out of gear.
Consequently, many of employees succumbed to it and decided to leave their jobs to find less strenuous
ones, which were compensating them fairly well. Since the attrition rate was higher than expected, the
organization took cognizance of this fact and started seeking feedback from the employees for improving
their work conditions. As a result of this survey, they decided to ameliorate their work culture and make
the employees rather satisfied with their jobs.
Organizations come in different sizes such as small, medium and large. Each of them has their own vision
and mission statements to fuel their desire to succeed and make it large. Most of these organizations are
employee centric. In other words, they think about the welfare and well-being of their employees by
promoting gender parity, better packages and allowances, psychological safety, extended paternity
and/or maternity leaves, periodic performance reviews and promotion cycles, etc. for their employees in
order to create a conducive environment. Currently, organizations are keenly looking at their cultures and
trying to make them leaner and inclusive. In this way, the proletarian rights of the employees are
protected, and hierarchical hegemony is being expunged leading to unbossed culture.
